River Day 05/17/2021

River Day brought everyone out this week: Tim, Jay, Ted, Pat, and myself.  The afternoon started out wet, cold and miserable, and ended much brighter (maybe a little fuzzier) and not so wet.  Needless to say we all hung out in the shop at Jay's.

I was reminded by Jay that my previous post left out a topic that we discussed, and I even made a note about: survival tips.  For some reason (Yuengling) we decided that this would be a nice addition to our posts on a semi-regular basis.  We got on the topic of making an "emergency" oil lamp out of a jar, some shoelace, vegetable oil, and a couple of other objects.  This was a project I learned about years ago when taking a FEMA course about nuclear fallout shelters.  I'm not sure how I forgot all of this (Yuengling), but now that it's been brought up, I think it would be a nice project for a Rivertarian get-together.  Stay tuned.

Anyway, as usual it was a great afternoon with friends, sharing stories (when you can actually get one finished), a lot of laughs, and a few cold beverages.

Thanks to everyone for a great River Day! (And thanks to Jay for this week's photo)

Flood at the River 06/25/2016

Because of the severe flooding across West Virginia this week, I decided to go check the damage at the camp.  Being a perfect opportunity for a bag-out, Pat rode with me.

We were fortunate that the water had receded since yesterday (Friday), so getting to the camp was no problem.  The road in didn't seem any worse than normal.  Almost immediately though, we could see signs of how high the water had been: piles of debris where you don't normally see any.

Below are a number of pictures from around the camp.  As you can see, the building has probably experienced it's last rebuild.  I don't think there's any coming back from this one.  Nor do I think there's anyone interested in rebuilding it.  You can also tell from the photos that the blue room has been flushed down the river.  No telling where it'll pop up.

River Day 01/25/10

Only 3 of us were able to make it to the river this week: Jay, Ted and Mark.

As you can tell from these pictures, the river level is still way up and probably came up another 4 feet or so while we were there. The next morning (Tuesday) was when the real flooding occurred; the water was just under the floor of the camp and the metal building one of these pictures was taken from was in all probability destroyed.

It was snowing in Beckley at the top of the mountain, but at river level we only had rain. We also saw a guy get hit by a vehicle, but we won't list any details here so no one has to testify. Gotta love domestics.

Oh, and for the record, we still had the best fire on the river.
