River Day 04/25/2016

Another River Day with beautiful weather, so another River Day with lots of Rivertarians.  This week the nice weather brought out Jay, Ted,  Pat, Kevin, Ben and myself.  Temps were around 80 degrees.

We had a couple of projects going on at the camp this week.  The first priority was getting the yard at the camp in order.  There was still some high water debris in various places, and the grass had not been cut at all yet.  I brought down my mower and weed-eater for the job.  Ted raked and picked up the debris, Jay ran the weed-eater, and I mowed.  Once we got started, it didn't take long to get it done, and it certainly looks better.

Freddy came down and brought me an old propane cylinder for another project.  Jay, Ted and I got the old valve out without too much trouble.  I think Freddy got a little nervous about this part, but we didn't have a fire going yet, so no danger, except for Ted's cigar.  Anyway, the 1st step of that project is done.  I'll be doing most of it at home, so I'll report the progress here later on.

Some of us did a little fishing and I finally got my first of the year - a red-eye, or rock bass.  Ben also caught one, but I don't remember if Jay got any or not.  I know that he did get the 1st (and only) helgie of the season, so that's a good sign.

We did have a small fire going, mostly to burn up the stuff that Ted raked up, but we made sure it was completely out before leaving.  Things are still pretty dry out.

Looking forward to a nice summer on the river!

River Day 04/18/2016

Rivertarians were in abundance this week.  Guess the beautiful weather made everyone want to celebrate River Day: Kevin, Scott, Pat, Jay, Ted, Tim, and myself all made it to the river.  And let's not forget the Fredster.  Temps were right around 80 degrees, and there wasn't a cloud in sight.

Despite the warm weather, we did have a small fire, and most of the evenings activities were centered around the fireplace.  As usual, lots of topics were covered during course of the afternoon.  I'm pretty sure we didn't solve any important issues this week.

The grass is high at the camp, but none of us brought anything to cut it with.  There's still a lot of flood debris that needs picked up and burned before it would be safe to mow. It's been too dry and windy to burn that kind of stuff, so we need a little rain to move ahead with that.  We did manage to clean up a little of our own mess by the cabin, and Freddy agreed to put it out with his trash (thanks!).

I tried fishing a couple of times, had a few bites, but never landed anything.  I looked again for helgies but they still haven't come up (out?).

Scott brought down a little snack for everyone, which was appreciated.

I can't think of a better way to start off each week.  Happy River Day!

River Day 04/11/2016

Things are continuing to green up along the river, but it seems to be a slow process.  Could be the sub-freezing temps and snow from the weekend.  None-the-less, it's looking more and more like spring.  And we had spring-like temps to go with the look - low 70's, blue skies (mostly), and a little wind.

Only Pat and I were at the river, not counting Freddy.  I tried a little fishing on and off.  No luck yet, but it was enjoyable as always.  The water level seemed a little lower than normal for this time of year. No, I don't know what the water temperature was.  Turned over several rocks but it's apparently still a little early for helgies.

We hung around the fire place most of the time, but it was one of those rare River Days where we had NO fire.  You read correctly - no fire.  There was plenty to burn, but the wind would have made it a little less that safe, given that nearby Grandview park had a brush fire just last week.

Sometime over the last few weeks Ron, or someone helping him, moved the camper back into it's usual resting spot.  Maybe it'll get some activity over the summer.  I'm sure it would do some good for a few people to get back to enjoying the river.

Once I left the river, I stopped by Jay's, where he and Ted were celebrating River Day.  As is often the case, we got into a little project, maybe a bit too over-zealously, but with acceptable results (I think).

Anyway, I got to see most of the Rivertarians on River Day, just not all at the river.  Guess I got to celebrate the holiday in stages.

By the way, has anyone seen Tim?  He's been MIA a little too long.

Happy River Day!
